Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Dir: Celine Sciamma
One word: Painting.
Celine Sciamma has been one of the exciting new voices of french cinema through her moving dramas focused on young women, such as ‘Girlhood’, ‘Tomboy’, and ‘Water Lilies’. The latest, and possibly the best entry so far is Portrait of a lady on fire.
The story is set at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is commissioned to paint a portrait of a young bride-to-be woman.
The whole film is a painting. Its visual poetry is a treat to the eyes and ears. A true artwork. Every frame is carefully made, attention to detail is amazing. The language of this film is not french, but ‘feelings’. Portrait of a Lady on fire is an enchanting portrayal of forbidden love, pushed by the two magnetic performances of the leads, Naomi Merlant and Adele Haenel. Using of Music here is superb, specially at the ending.
Definitely one of the very best films of the year, simply a gift.
